Toronto: Croatian Students might lose their identity

UofT has had a Croatian program for many years running.  Helping our Kids learn about our culture, language and traditions.  This program has been a great success until now.  Some controversy has risen with the institution of a new Serbian professor.  The program has been changed for the upcoming year which has merged the slavic based courses as one.

  • Elementary Serbian + Elementary Croatian => Elementary Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian
  • Serbian Cultural History + Croatian Cultural History => Cultural History of the South Slavs
  • Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian On Film  => Postwar Yugoslav Cinema: 1945-1990
  • New Course => Yugoslavia’s Literary Émigrés and Exiles

Elementary Croatian and Croatian Cultural History were by far the most popular among Croatian students, and now they’re gone.  Now the Croatian program is in danger of disappearing.

After many successful years as a program, losing this would be a shame.  Students should stand up and voice their opinions along with the communities support.  Let’s not let others assimilate our identity again.

Is this merge because of enrolment issues?  Yugo nostalgia?  We’d like to hear your thoughts in the comments.

  1. Is there a formally organized body that will represent Croatian students’ interests? Can you provide any specific contact information?

  2. This isn’t the first time they’ve attempted to do this merging. Croatians need to mobilize and stop this. I believe this is the first step to try and reserect Serbo-Croatian.

    Our modern language has been corrupted enough during the Yugoslav period which might I remind everyone started after the First World War.

    Norwegian and Swedish are more similar languages than Croatian and Serbian and the idea of uniting the two languages or cultures into a single course or program would never fly in academic circles but because we are Eastern Europe, or even just the Balkans we are not afforded the same consideration or respect as other nations and cultures. It is degrading and disrespectful.

    I am willing to begin a letter writing campaign to not onlz U of T but also the Council of Ontario Universities, my brother works there I’ll see which department might be able to help I also urge Croats to write letters of outrage to newspaper Editors bad press can be a powerful weapon, if U of T is shamed they may rethink this endeavour.

  3. The ‘Slavic Program’ (the ‘Croatian Program’ mentioned does not exist) has been experiencing significant decline in popularity for a number of years, even as far back as when I took the ‘Croatian Cultural History’ course at UT in 2001.

    Generally, the Program is lacking the enrollment numbers needed to keep the current course offerings up and running. Universities tend to downsize/merge/amalgamate courses in order to save programs. In my experience as a student and in working administration for one of UT’s larger faculties, this is the Slavic Dept.’s attempt so as to not lose funding and save the program. The Dept. already downsized the Slavic Program to save it back while I was attending school there. One of the things they did was join the separate Croatian and Serbian courses into one.

    And getting more Croatian students to enroll is unrealistic. I was one of a small hand full of ethnically Croatian students taking the “Croatian Cultural History”. Majority of the students enrolled were Serbian. Aside from only a small number of Croatians at UT actually having interest in the Slavic Program, the Croatian student population at UT is too small a number to support such an initiative solely through enrollment.

    The only real solution is to become proactive in shaping the content/structure of the new courses, so as to protect Croatian history from being assimilated into Serbian history as one. The U of T Croatian Student Union should be able to help or offer advice as they have dealt with this issue in the past.

  4. I understand enrollment numbers being a problem but I don’t see how fusing language and culture courses of two or arguably more ethnic groups with distinct and very different languages, cultures and histories is the academically sound method to preserve the program.

    I believe that if not kept seperate the course material will be usurped; most likely by the Serbs as the above commentor stated they seem to have one up over us already.

    The Council of Ontario Universities is starting to audit and accredit undergraduate programs as of this year (until now they only did ost grad programs) so if there are any issues over the content or how it is taught that warrants intervention then this is the surest way to protect Croatia’s interests.

    I would rather see the whole program go to hell then see our identity stolen or corrupted by anyone not just Serbs.

  5. I understand your fear of ‘fusing’ together the histories of distinctive groups of people into one, but at this point, what you are saying is speculation, unless you can prove otherwise. Be credible, back up what you say. Have you seen the new course outlines? If so, share. Perhaps the ‘History of the South Slavs’ is an all encompassing title for a course that covers each group’s distinctive history?

    You are obviously passionate about this topic, so do something.

  6. Dubravka, bez uvrede ali nemoj mi mlatiti praznom slamom. Tko se na vruće speče na hladno puše. Mene samo zanima ako će ove nekoliko točke biti uključene u temama što će se učiti u tom Južno Slavenskom (Yugoslavia means exactly that = South Slavic) programu:

    1) Da li će Načertanje biti uključeno u tim “course”-evima? te jest kako Srbi već prije nego što su se odrvali turske vlasti već imaju plan zvani “Načertanje” za stvaranje veliku Srbiju plaćena krvlju nevinih, Hrvata, Crno Goraca, Makedonaca, i Albanaca. Da Srbi još za vrijeme Turske vladavine Balkanom koloniziraju BiH i da je kljuć u “Načertanje” i konačne stvaranje velike Srbije vlast nad Pravoslavnim Crkvama ne-Srba to jest Crno Gorske i Makedonske Pravoslavnih Crkava te nad pravoslavcima u BiH koji su pretežno bivši katolici koji nisu htjeli prelaziti na Islam ali nisu imali katoličkih svećnika radi Turskih progona Katoličke Crkve. Srpska Pravoslavna Crkva na to šalju iz Srbije pravoslavne sveštenike da posrbljuju kršćane BiH u sklopu sa načelima “Načertanje”.

    2) Ili pak ako će se učiti o “porez krvi” koji su katolici Hrvati morali plaćati svojom muškom djecom za vrijeme Turske okupacije BiH a pravoslavci nisu morali? Kako svake 3 do 5 pet godina sva muška djeca do 2 godine starosti su bila uzeti iz ruka plačućih hrvtaksih majki i očeva i odvedeni u Tursku i tamo odgojena da budu ratnici ili imami te vračeni u Bosnu da potlaću preostatak hrvatskog naroda oružjem ili Kuranom. I da postoji jedna pokrajina imenom “Sandžak” pokraj Stambola, “Istambul” za koji neznaju(ustvari Carigrad je pravo ime tog grada na hrvatskom), gdje se sve do danas prića Hrvatski! – (Isto ima ime kao ali nije ista pokrajina zvana Sandžak koja se nalazi na međi Crne Gore, Bosne i Srbije)

    3) Ili ako će se učiti kako je Trebinjska Nadbiskupija morala pobjeći u Dubrovačku Republiku i njenu imovina i vjernici su predani Srpskoj Pravoslavnoj Crkvi jer su Srbi pomogli Turcima da osvoje Hercegovinu. I da sve do danas Trebinjska Nadbiskupija stoluje na otoku Mljetu a ne u Trebinje gdje je joj mjesto i gdje Hrvati već od predprošlog stoljeća su iztrebljeni iz istočne Hercegovine i tamo katolika i Hrvata više nema.

    4) Hoće li dakle se učiti da to što se danas zove zapadna Bosna, okolica Banja Luke sve do Pounja, prije dolazak Turaka nije bila Bosna nego se zvalo to područje Donji Krajevi i upravljalo je to područje Hrvatski Ban a ne Bosanski Ban makar da je i Bosna bila dio Hrvatske Kraljevine i Bosanski Ban je uvijek bio Hrvat i katolik

    5) Da li će se učiti kako je pronađeno da u Glamoću tamošnja takozvana “pravoslavna” crkva nije uopće pravoslavna nego je staro Hrvatska crkva koja je već stoljećima oteta Hrvatima od strana tamošnjih srpskih kolonista i tek nakon kako je HVO oslobodio to područje su pronađene zakopane ispod crkve ostaci hrvatskih katoličkih svetinja.

    6) I ako bude riječ o krađi hrvatske kulture draga moja, izvorni narodni ples, folklor, BIH pripada Hrvatima ali plesove Glamočkog kraje te Istočne Hercegovine plešu odavno Srbi pod svojom krvničkom zastavom i kažu da je srpska kad nije jer to prvo nije Srbija a niti pripada po svojim osobinama i značajima srpskom to jest Moravskom Etnografskom Plesnom Području već Dinarskom Etnografskom Plesnom Području i to skupa sa ostalim hrvatskim krajevima tog Etnografskog Područja; Lika, Kordun, Ravni Kotari, Dalmatinska Zagora te i otocima srednjeg Jadrana koji djele međusobom sličnosti. Srbi isto tako plešu Bunjevaćka Kola i predstavljaju to kao srpsko makar da večina Bunjevaca za sebe kažu da su Hrvati

    7) Mene čak zanima ako će se Turska okupacija Hrvatske BiH tako uopće zvati? Ili će Bosna biti proglašena Kraljevinom na U of T. Ili će se možda učiti istina? Da su Bosnanski plemići tražila novu krunu od Pape jer nisu htjela Mađara za Kralja te je Bosna tvrdila da je hrvatska kruna nepravedno dana Mađarima po kraljici mađarici, sestra mađarskog kralja nakon smrti njezinog muža Hrvatskog Kralja Petra Svačića, i da se Tvrtko krunio Kraljem Hrvatska ne Bosne čije je on samo nosio ime i titulu Bana? O tome svedoći da je Tvrtko Krunjen “Stjepan Tvrtko Drugi” Pošto je prvi takozvani Bosanski Kralj kako može biti drugi? Lako kad je već bio Kralj Stjepan u Hrvata pa zato jer je Tvrtko uzeo drugo ime o krunjenju “STJEPAN” on je dakle drugi. A Razlog zašto se Tvrtko izabrao za kralja Hrvatske, je zato jer je po svojoj majci iz loze Trpimirovaca to jest njegova majka je bila potomkinja Kralja Tomislava Prvog Krunjenog Hrvatskog Kralja 925 godine Kristove na Duvanjskom polju kod Tomislavgrada koji danas nosi njegovo ime. Za koji neznaju od Kralja Tomislava se djed zvao Trpimir Prvi po njemu se svi prezivaju Trpimirović tako da je Kralj Tomislav = Tomislav Trpimirović.

    Ako ti, Dubravka želiš, ili bilo tko drugi želi učiti povijest Srba, ili neki tako zvani, to jest izmišljenih, “Bošnjaka” – (kažem izmišljeni jer prije ovog tisućljeća nije to postajalo kao ime za naciju već samo kao hrvatsko prezime što to ustvari i jest.) Onda izvoli i uči. Mene samo zanima koliko ima Hrvata, ti uključena, koji će znati ako ih drugi uče svoju vlastitu kulturu i povijest ispravno ili uče krivo i lažno?

    Nemam živaca ni strpljenje za naivce, s oproštenjem ako zvučim grub ali to je kako ja vidim stanje. Srbi su probali već dva puta otvorenom ratom uništit nas i naš identitet, našu prošlost i kulturu. Postavljam pitanje, ćemu dobroga od njih imamo se nadati? Moja mama uvijek kaže: “Bolje vjerovati nego se uvjeriti” Ja ću rađe stupati se s uvjernjem da nam žele zlo nego čekati da se to moje uvjerenje opravda.

  8. The institutions that should care about Croatian identity in Toronto are not doing their essential job because they are corrupted. A perfect example is AMCA Toronto – society of former Croatian students (alumni and friends of the Croatian universities). They never opposed an idea to merge Serbian and Croatian history, culture and language. Furthermore, they were discouraging their members of any attempts to change that.
    The sad thing is that many Croatians in Croatian community in Toronto is supporting that society as well as official Croatian government. So, do not blame anyone else than Croats. Serbians are doing whatever they can to establish themselves as leaders and Croatian elite are doing whatever they can to establish themselves as a followers. Apparently, it doesn’t matter what the rest of Croatian patriots are thinking as they have no power to make any changes.

    Just a reminder that 30 years ago in Dalmatia, in hart of Croatia, Yugoslav history teachers teaches that Vuk Stefanovic Karadjic brought a literacy to Croatians – covering the truth that Kanibal Lucic and Petar Hektorovic were publishing books in Croatian language 300 years before Vuk Stefanovic Karadjic was born.
    Now I am curious who is going to preach Cultural History of the South Slavs in Toronto?

    Ralf Bogart, a pro-Serb teacher is gone. Would his successor going to be again a pro-Serb and pro-Yugoslav teacher that solely task would be to infiltrate young Croatians mind with an idea that Serbs dominance is normal and inevitably fact?

    Kudos to Nikola Demarin, a president of AMCA Toronto who supported Ralf Bogart many many years.

  10. I agree with dalmatian. Srbi posvajaju sve sto je nase i hvale se da je njihovo. Read about Rudjer Boskovic and other famous Croatians – Wikipedia site. Strasno. I didn’t know that Serbian can be also Jesuit (catholic priest) Sto mi radimo da kazemo svijetu istinu o sebi i svom narodu?

  11. Srbi su dobro organizirani i imaju plan kojeg se drže. To pokazuje koliko su teritorija osvojili u posljednih 100 godina. Isto tako možemo vidjeti koliko teritorija je Hrvatska izgubila u posljednih 100 godina (da se ne zaboravi, prije WWII, više od polovice Sarajevskog stanovništva su bili Hrvati).
    Srbi isto tako imaju snažnu propagandnu mašineriju i svoje agente/simpatizere pametno raspoređene među viđenijim Hrvatima u zemlji i svijetu (upoznao neke i u Torontu) koji sistemetski obeshrabruju Hrvatske patriote od bilo kakve akcije koja ide u smjeru zaštite Hrvatske kulture, baštine i identiteta. I tako imamo Hrvate koji nas pokušavaju prodati ili istoku ili zapadu, koji su eksponirani u javnosti i medijim i time utječu na formiranje mišljenja drugih Hrvata i imamo Hrvate koji koji se ne pokušavaju prodavati ni zapadu ni istoku, već gradidi vlastiti put nezavisnosti u kojem bi ekonomsko surađivali i s istokom i zapadom, ali kao ravnopravan partner, a ne podređen kao danas i u prošlosti. Sva ova nastojanja su naravno neprihvatljiva za tu elitu koja nas pokušava prodati ili Srbima ili Evropi, pa bjesomučno anatemiziraju svakoga koji gaji ljubav za svoju domovinu. To je išlo toliko daleko da se danas domoljub izjednačava sa fašistom, s ciljem da se obeshrabri bilo koga da se bori za nacionalne interesa, kao što je recimo i ovo pitanje oko Croatian Studies Programs. Osobno sam svjedokom tko je i kako obeshrabrivao svakoga tko je nastojao riješiti ovaj problem u korist Hrvata. Ti isti su se šprdali i s Hrvatskim braniteljima, Hrvatskim Grbom, radili protiv interesa Hrvata, sakriveni iza humanitarnih aktivnosti i elitizma, uz poršku Hrvatkog konzulata u Torontu. U konačnici, domoljubi su se povlačili pognute glave, a anti-hrvati su i dalje tamo gdje jesu, koji s vremena na vrijeme zavijore Hrvatsku zastavu i izgovore par progodnih domoljubnih fraza – da ne bi bila pre-očita njihova protu-hrvatska djelatnost.

    Opasnost po Hrvatski opstanak (kultura, jezik, a i opstojnost države) nisu toliko neprijatelji koji se deklariraju kao neprijatelji, već guje koje desetljećima tavore u sjeni, koji sistematski razaraju Hrvatsko biće (u zemlji i inozemstvu) i kojima ne možete dokazati ništa. To je kako kada ste sigurni da je profesor primio mito, ali to ne mozete dokazati, jer se transakcija odvijala u četiri oka.
